A Particular Way of Selling – A Book Critique

Routledge's The Theory and Practice of Online Teaching and Learning: A Guide for Academic Professionals is a free online book of only sixty pages aimed at those who want to delve into the online education topic. It is organised into six different chapters where each one presents excerpts from various books claimed to be written by experts on the field. The work seems to be designed to provide readers with an overview of other books to attract customers. As a compilation of many titles in a slightly short number of pages, it exposes a varied scope of topics around the central theme: online education . The variety of authors compiled in the book might confuse the prospective readers as it seems a hodgepodge of different writing styles.       The book provides a great range of sub-topics related to the field of online education that starts with the presentation of differences between online and traditional education in chapter one. ...

Academic Writing and the Use of APA Style

The American Psychological Association (APA) Manual provides a set of requirements for those who wish to write under the scope of their format. The APA Manual includes guidelines both for including in-text citations and reference lists in pieces of writing. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the use of APA specifications for in-text citations and reference pages in the article Beyond Reflection: Teacher Learning as Praxis , by Hoffman-Kipp, Artiles, and López Torres (2003).  Even though in the article mentioned above there are many instances of misuse of those specifications, this paper will only focus on the most significant ones.   According to the American Psychological Association (2009), “References in APA publications are cited in-text with an author-date citation system and are listed alphabetically in the reference list” (p.174). In turn, APA states that reference lists must be complete for the readers to be able ...

Vignette: The New Teacher

It was my first time working as a teacher. The lesson took place in a room which was no more than four by four metres with a group of 17-year-old teenagers. Having just received my teaching degree, I did not have experience dealing with teenagers as I nearly was a teenager too. I entered the classroom and introduced myself, trying not to shout too much but not speaking too low also. I had not noticed that half of it was made of glass and, the moment I slammed the door, the glass smashed into pieces. It did call my students´ attention but, indeed, not in the right way. From that moment on, the students baptized me the clumsy teacher but, even though I could have harmed someone, it resulted in a positive experience; students saw the human part of their teacher and, eventually,   fo...
